Showing Up and Speaking Out: Using Strategic Communications to Champion Public Health

For three decades, National Public Health Week has been a cornerstone in advancing health equity, improving community well-being and championing policies that protect and promote public health.
But this year is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. National Public Health Week in 2025 feels distinctly different. Speculation, fear and uncertainty are everywhere. It’s become clear that public health communicators will need more than just good work, passion and positivity.
One of the (many) reasons our social-impact public relations agency is unique is our relationship with our clients. We do great work, and our teams bring talent, drive and energy to projects. But ultimately, our work at Piper & Gold stems from one common thread—our core values always align with the organizations we serve.
We never take on work we don’t believe in. We fight for what’s right.
That’s what I find so special about working in the public health sector and with our partners, the Michigan Public Health Institute, the Center for Precision Public Health, the Ingham County Health Department and various projects at the intersection of public health, education and communications.
Working with the people and organizations at the front lines of public health is a privilege.
That’s why I choose to work for a small-by-choice agency, whose leadership brings attention to fighting for what’s right, like clearly stating how public health communications save lives.
As an advocate for public health and healthy communities, I’m energized every day by doing work that makes a difference. At P&G our values—people-centricity, integrity, excellence, authenticity, inclusivity, teamwork, big-thinking and active listening—aren’t just words. They’re principles that guide every decision, interaction and challenge we face.
Public relations is constantly evolving and as we begin to face emerging challenges, like communications related to climate change and misinformation, I see these issues as opportunities to respond with work that inspires trust, centers on serving people and sparks positive social change.
The innovations shaping the future of public health are game-changing and learning how to ethically harness the power of artificial intelligence and optimize digital spaces will further enhance our work to dismantle barriers and share powerful truths.
Piper & Gold’s dedication to amplifying the work of mission-driven organizations like our public health partners, motivates me to do my best work to change systems that harm, challenge attitudes that oppress and teach behaviors that amplify and enhance good work.
During National Public Health Week, I’m reminded that we can all play a powerful role in celebrating public health successes, preparing for upcoming challenges and advocating for change.
Please join me in using your voice. Share evidence-based information. Speak up against injustices and mobilize to do good where you can.
